Inspired
by the possibility of turning anything and
everything into miniature habitats,
Rick and Sierran decided to remodel an antique
china hutch. They named the project The
Chinoiserie, in honor of its humble beginnings
as a china cabinet.
The
origin of the word china (dishes) is China
(country) where porcelain was first introduced;
Chinoiserie is a term that refers to anything
related to china.
Protected by a glass door, the interior layout
is similar to that of an old brownstone; the
period is set in the late 1800s, with the use
of coal and fireplaces for heat, and gas lighting
for illumination.
A drawer at the base of the cabinet provides
convenient storage for extra furnishings and
seasonal displays.
The design incorporates a basement and
three floors, including a formal entry
with stained glass door sidelights,
ten windows, and four fireplaces.
It has been hard-wired to provide two choices
of lighting: there is a daylight illusion
where twelve fluorescents placed on the outside
wall of the interior carcass light up, allowing
daylight to stream into the windows.
The windows have been specially prepared to
appear to look out on trees and formal gardens.
The alternate lighting is more traditional,
made up of twenty-three gas lights throughout
the interior. The grand staircase, made from
black walnut and pine, as well as the arched
doorways, were designed and created by Rick.

With Furnishings
Most of the furniture items on display were
made by Bespaq. The dressings on each of the
beds were designed and handmade by Sierran.
The oil paintings on display made be found
at Sierran's
Studio. Many more accessories are needed
to complete the illusion (drapes, vases, dishes,
personal items), but those choices will be
left to the new owner once the hutch is sold.
Chinoiserie, with all furnishings as shown
(oil paintings not included), $4800.00
